ENTERTAINMENT, excitement, amusement: sports, games, playing -- these things are not true living, they are a running away from life. They are a denial of living; a tragic, criminal perversion of true living and true pleasure and true joy. They are abortions, evasions, dead ends. The only true living is being part of the eternal Plan and Work of God, and growing spiritually in knowledge and wisdom and grace. Living is GROWTH. Where there is no growth there is stagnation, and -- at last -- death. And it must be growth in real, permanent, lasting things -- things connected with God and eternity. How can marking time -- and wasting time -- on death row, playing tiddledywinks, be called "living"? And that's all the present natural life is: filling up the time with some mind-dulling distraction, until it comes our turn to die. That was not the destiny God planned for man, but it is the one most choose -- "Eat, drink, and go through the motions of being merry, for tomorrow we die." Is that all that the marvelous contrivance called "man" was made for? God forbid!
