God's Handiwork

"The handiwork of God." We hear the expression often. It is a pat phrase on the lips of those who have run off to the woods or to the beach to spend God's time and money enjoying themselves in laziness. We do not condemn the phrase as such. It is fine IF it is coupled with a total life-dedication to the real, handy, WORK of God -- the work right to hand, day after day in His service: if it comes from a mind that gives evidence that it has spent much profitable time with God and His work. But, sadly, so often it is just a phrase, a form of words, a conscience-salver: "Here I am, enjoying myself, doing nothing useful for others, playing around, wasting my time, childishly engaged in meaninglessly beating a stupid little ball into a foolish little hole -- and, O yes, enjoying the "handiwork of God."
