PAGE 60 Translation of Archbishop Fabri's document: Memorandum From Dr. Johannes Fabri Some time ago, after you were taken into custody and imprisoned, and even though it was most definitely decided that you must die, through the chief Inquisitor as intermediary and mediator you most fervently begged leave to strongly deny being the author of any wicked error. Indeed you are, my dear Doctor, human and therefore often could have erred and slipped, even in regard to passages of Holy Scripture. You also requested that the most wise and famous King FERDINAND, my most merciful lord and prince, might give me to you as an enquirer and examiner, so that if you were involved in difficulty through error, I might be able to assist and free you from the same. Therefore that same Most Serene King, with his zeal and manifestly inborn goodness, and with such a mind as befits a Christian prince, being persuaded, has kindly yielded to your prayers. Nothing is of such vital concern to that excellent King as that the salvation of souls should not be snatched into danger of eternal damnation; likewise that you yourself, returning to wisdom, along with those who have been led astray by your doctrine, should be freed from wicked error, and may return to the communion of the Holy Catholic Church. He wished me to set out at once from Esztergom (which is a city of Hungary) to see you. At the same time he instructed me to strive with the greatest zeal so that I, by helping you, who are thus afflicted, with appropriate spiritual medicine, may renew the minds of many more who have been infected with the same contagion -- and that I may lead them all, snatched from this foul flood of errors, safe into the ark of Noah, that is, the true Catholic Church. It was very troublesome and grievous to start a journey on a road so infested with robbers. But I left two days ago, and come to you on the basis of an old friendship which we both enjoyed at one time in the same College, and in several other places, and also because of that remarkable love with which I always embraced you until you turned aside to your heretical beliefs... |
