PAGE 105

We believe in Jesus, to whom was given the name of Christ, that is, the Anointed One of God promised of old to the Fathers, who was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit and with power, as the highest Prophet, the highest Priest and the highest and heavenly King of all.

We also believe in Jesus Christ for the reason that he is the Son of the One God, the Creator of heaven and earth, and he is not some ordinary one such as the angels are, and many men are, but only begotten. For he alone was begotten by divine power in the womb of a chaste virgin, and he alone up to this time, was raised from the dead by God unto immortal life.

For Jesus Christ is so much the Son of God that all the rest of the sons of God, whether they be angels or human beings, when compared to him, are not so much sons of God as servants of Jesus Christ. Frequently in the apostolic writings, Jesus Christ, as distinct from God, is distinguished by the title of Our Lord. Because he has been made Lord of Lords by God, therefore also he is called Lord in an absolute sense. Through his primacy in the New Covenant he is said to be our one Lord. He has been raised up by God to such a great majesty that in no other way, except in his name and by faith in him, may we obtain salvation.

Since in his origin the Father is seen as generating, and the mother as conceiving and bearing, the foetus, Jesus Christ had no man as his own father, but was conceived by the working of the Holy Spirit alone. Inasmuch as he was conceived in the womb of a virgin, he is true man. Inasmuch as he was begotten on a virgin espoused to a husband of the house of David, he is son of David, according to the predictions of the prophets. 250
