PAGE 43

Whosoever desires baptism in water first presents himself before an elder for interview, that it may be found out whether he be sufficiently instructed in the faith, the gospel, the doctrines that pertain to a new and real Christian life...

If he can meet these requirements, the elder presents him to the ecclesia and admonishes all brethren and sisters to kneel down, and with hearty devotion to pray to God that He may grant to the candidate grace and strength.

Then the elder proffers the baptismal oath to the candidate thus:

Question: Do you believe in almighty God, maker of heaven and earth? If so, proclaim it publicly.

[Various doctrinal items follow in the same manner]

Answer: I Believe. [to each]

Question: Will you, henceforth, in your life and manner of speech, act according to the word of Christ, insofar as he grants you grace? Speak.

Answer: I will.

Question: In the light of this faith and this vow, do you desire to be baptized in water, according to the commandment of God and be enrolled in the visible ecclesia of Christ, for the remission of your sins?

Answer: I do earnestly desire it.

The elder then baptizes the candidate in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. He then exhorts the ecclesia once more to pray for the newcomer, that God may increase his faith.

After this prayer, the elder puts his hand on the head of the new brother or sister and says: We welcome you as a new member of the ecclesia of Christ and invite you to participate with other brethren and sisters in the breaking of bread and prayer. God be with you and with your spirit. Amen.127
