May 28th -- Titus 1,2,3 Faith and Doctrine |
||||||||||||||
The ground for instruction .... would be the faith in Christ. Sound faith and doctrine are stressed thrice in the first 17 verses of the letter to Titus (1:9, 13; 2:1). In the first century, sound doctrine comprised the "things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ" as expounded by the apostles. No other gospel was to be countenanced (Galations 1:8). Precisely the same should obtain today, though we are not to associate a perfect or final understanding of the whole Truth with any modern individual. The labours of our forbears in the Truth and the researches of qualified students discerningly studied, may be of great help, but we must discover the Truth for ourselves if it is to be a force in our lives, not be content with accepting it as read. There is a price to pay for really having the Truth which is in Jesus. It is -- a practical thoroughgoing dedication of the mind and the will, of the thoughts and the life.
