November 27th --Titus

ADVICE TO A YOUNG MAN

HOW modestly Paul, the great teacher, speaks to Titus, presuming in no way upon his great privilege and authority as a chosen vessel! He sinks the messenger in the message, even classing himself among the rank and file of the brotherhood. "Not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to God's mercy he saved us. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, deceived and disobedient." Now we rest upon the kindness and love of God our Saviour, that being justified by His grace we should be made heirs of eternal life. How valuable to us is the warning to the young man against certain deadly blights upon spiritual growth. "Avoid foolish questions and genealogies, and contentions about the Law; for they are unprofitable and vain." Against all such things the apostle warns his son in the faith. Maintain good works, be careful in them. These things are good and profitable unto men, all else is unprofitable, vain.
