November 5th -- Acts 16, 17 BEARING UNJUST CRITICISM |
||||||||||||||
ONE exhortation which we can draw from Acts 15:36 to 18:22 is derived from the criticisms which have been levelled at Paul:uncharitableness -- for not taking John Mark, and falling out with Barnabas; inconsistency -- for circumcising Timothy and not Titus; pride -- for demanding that the magistrates of Philippi should come personally and fetch Silas and himself out of prison; ignorance -- for the views he held out to the Epicureans and Stoics in Athens; poor judgment -- concerning his alleged preaching failure in Athens. We know that, in the case of Paul, these criticisms can easily be rebutted; and, whereas we should try to avoid being uncharitable, inconsistent, proud, ignorant or exercising bad judgment, if we remember that the great apostle had to suffer and be subjected to such attacks, it should help us to bear without resentment the unjust criticisms which sometimes come our way.
