March 18th -- Psalm 139

LOVING GOD

WE do not love a dream; that is only a kind of self-love, like the fabled Greek who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool. We cannot love a convention, a respectability; that is only a refuge for dried-up souls, who by running in a groove can evade the need of loving. We do not love a hobby (however much we may like it), because a hobby in itself is only an expression of our own energy, mental or physical. The fact is that we cannot love God unless we know Him to be wholly other than ourselves; and then we can say with the Psalmist: O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising,Thou understandest my thought afar off ...Search me, O God, and know my heart:Try me, and know my thoughts:And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting(Psalm 139:1-2, 23-24)
